Ford Ranger Breadcrumbs Feature Helps Off-Road Drivers Find Their Way Back

When you first hear about breadcrumbs in a new vehicle, you'd probably assume it's something to do with what's been left on the floor when people have been eating their lunch on-the-go. Although the Breadcrumbs tech in the Ford Ranger pickup truck doesn’t literally have to do with cleaning up or detailing your trucks or Ford cars after an impromptu lunch, the two things are not completely unlinked.
What the feature is
The Breadcrumbs feature is to be found in the SYNC® 3 navigation settings, and it's a feature designed to take some of the potential stress out of off-road adventures. Just as leaving a trail of literal breadcrumbs behind you was an old-fashioned way of finding your way back to where you started from in unfamiliar territory, Ford's Breadcrumbs feature is a virtual way of doing exactly the same thing.
Satellite navigation is a fantastic tool, but drivers still have to rely on it pointing the way back to or from a destination with road directions and identifiable landmarks. If you've ever been using a navigation system that hasn't been updated and you come upon a new road layout, you'll know the instructions it gives can be little more than useless. Now think of using a navigation system off-road where the whole screen could be nothing more than a single color with few if any, identifiable features.
Unless you have been paying particular interest to compass readings and waypoints, finding your way back to where you left the road could be extremely difficult. The Breadcrumbs feature makes finding your way back to where you started by dropping a virtual pin every second while you're out there driving in the wilderness off-road.
How it works
Taking the Ranger Off-Road
The Satnav Breadcrumbs feature is completely unobtrusive as it operates in the background of the navigation system found in XLT and Lariat versions of the Ford Ranger pickup truck. In fact, the feature is also available for other Ford trucks that have been specified with the SYNC® 3 navigation and infotainment system.
Drivers don’t need to have the system on all the time if they don’t want it on, and you wouldn't want it on if you were driving in a familiar area or on the road. But if you choose to turn the system on you can drive comfortably in the knowledge that no matter where you choose to let the Ranger take you, you're going to be able to find your way back to the pavement you left behind. All you have to do is follow the route you've taken by following the virtual breadcrumb trail back to where you came from. Nothing could be simpler, and it really will take the stress out of exploring areas of wilderness you’re unfamiliar with.
Taking the Ranger Off-Road
If you're serious about off-roading in the new Ford Ranger, it can also be equipped with an FX4 Off-Road Package that adds an electronic locking rear differential and Terrain Management System with Trail Control that provides situation-specific traction. Other off-road accessories can also be added, such as a winch-capable front bumper and leveling kit that offer improved ground clearance for challenging off-road conditions along with extra-rugged styling.
