The 2017 Ford Focus is the seventh model year of what is now the compact car's third-generation, and a quick look at the current Focus family reveals there's a version to suit just about every taste. Although the hatch and wagon variants were ditched when the second-generation came to an end and instead we were given the choice between coupe and four-door sedan, there were still more than enough different takes on the Focus to keep just about everyone happy. However, the coupe got the push for when the third-generation came around as a truly global offering, which means we now still get a four-door sedan but the hatch is back in place of the coupe.
When you consider the 2017 Ford Focus is one of the world's biggest-selling mass-market cars, it's actually pretty remarkable how versatile it is in terms of its appeal. Depending on how you specify it, the Focus can be a relatively inexpensive and cheap to run family shopper, a well-equipped and comfortably appointed commuter car, or a tire-screeching, hot-hatch hooligan.
This is all made possible due to the fact there are currently ten different trims, although some are the same trim split between hatch and sedan variants. The 2017 Ford Focus range kicks off with the entry level S model that's only available in sedan form. Next up are the SE, SEL and Titanium trims in both sedan and hatch formats. From there we do start to go more towards the extremes of the family with the performance ST and the environmentally friendly Focus Electric. Last but by no means least, is the simply awesome and long-awaited for these shores, high-performance Focus RS.
There are four engines to select from in the Focus at the moment, but the standard engine in the vast majority of models is a 2.0-liter Ti-VCT inline-four that develops 160 horsepower and 146 lb.-ft. of torque. The power then gets sent to the front wheels through your choice between a six-speed manual a six-speed automatic and a six-speed auto with SelectShift. There's an optional engine available for the SE sedan and hatch models, and it could be a bit of a surprise for the uninitiated. It's not a more powerful version of the standard 2.0-liter or something even bigger; it's actually a considerably smaller 1.0-liter three-cylinder offering. However, this is no ordinary little engine as it's the multi-award winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost that's been gaining rave reviews everywhere ever since its launch. This diminutive powerplant puts out 123 horsepower and 125 lb.-ft. of torque, but it has to be experienced to be believed. The third engine in the family is another beauty in the form of a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-pot, which gives the Focus 252 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. to play around with, but it's only available in the ST trim.
There is a fourth option, but that's the 2.3-liter EcoBoost in the Focus RS, and that model and engine are a story all on their own.
Fuel economy is a big strength of the 2017 Ford Focus, and even the performance orientated ST delivers good numbers. It won’t surprise anyone the 1.0-liter EcoBoost is the fuel economy champion, and that superb little engine with the manual transmission delivers EPA-estimated ratings of 30 mpg in the city, 42 mpg on the highway and 35 mpg combined.* The naturally aspirated 2.0-liter then gets you as much as 27/40/31 mpg with the six-speed PowerShift automatic, while even the 2.0-liter EcoBoost in the ST returns 22/31/25 mpg with its six-speed manual.
