2020 Ford Escape SE Sport Hybrid Features and Specs
It can be hard to believe when you're told if you don’t already know, but the Ford Escape has now been with us for almost two decades. The latest new model is the all-new 2020 Ford Escape, which is the first model year of the fourth-generation of these popular compact Ford SUVs.
This is an important year for the Escape. Not only is this an all-new version of the Escape, but this big-selling compact crossover is also now entering the hybrid SUV realm once again with the introduction of the Ford Escape SE Sport Hybrid model. A plug-in-hybrid is on the way, but for the moment, the 2020 Ford Escape SE Hybrid is the most economical and the most exciting version of the new Escape.
Although the styling of the SE Hybrid isn’t significantly different from the rest of the 2020 Escape SUV family, it's still worth mentioning because this really is quite a big change. If the previous model was very car-like and had more than a passing resemblance to the Focus it shared a platform with, this version goes even further in that direction. The previous model already drew comparisons, but this new escape is even sleeker, sportier, smoother and more upscale than its predecessor, and the smooth lines must make this one of the most desirable vehicles in its class right now.
It's worth noting where this new model sits in the 2020 Escape lineup. The entry-level model in the range is the Escape S, and then the range goes to the SE, SE Sport Hybrid, SEL, and finally to the range-topping Titanium. The SE Hybrid is, therefore, smack in the middle of the new Escape family, which means it represents a great balance of specification and value for money.
Some of us may have forgotten, but Ford used to offer a hybrid version of the Escape until 2012. If you know that model you can forget any comparisons as this new hybrid Escape is completely new. The 2020 Escape Hybrid features a gas/electric hybrid system that's made up of a 2.5-liter inline-four gas engine with an 88 kW electric motor and a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
The system is good for a combined 200 horsepower and 209 lb.-ft. of torque, which is sent to the front wheels in standard form through a continuously variable transmission. All-wheel-drive is an available option and can get up to 85 mph on electric power only.
Features and equipment
This is a well-equipped model, especially for the price. Standard features include electronic temperature control, a 10-way power driver seat with front row heat, LED signature lighting, a body-color rear spoiler, Ford Co-Pilot360, 17-inch alloy wheels, Sync 3 infotainment, Sirius Satellite Radio, and a full set of power features.
One of the main reasons for choosing a hybrid is to get good fuel economy, and the 2020 Ford Escape SE Sport Hybrid certainly delivers in that area. In front-drive format, the Escape Hybrid is rated by the EPA at 44 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway.
