All-new 2019 Ford Edge SUV unveiled

The Ford Edge is
one of a handful of Ford vehicles that are sold all around the world these days
in pretty much the same form and with the same name they have here. When a
vehicle like that is refreshed or redesigned then, it has to be a bit of a
breath-holding moment for the designers when it gets unveiled to the world for
the first time. The 2019 Ford Edge
is a refresh and not a full redesign, but there's plenty that's new and updated
to talk about with latest version of the midsize SUV.
The headlines
Updates for the 2019 model year include the aesthetic as
well as mechanical, so as well as a restyled front and rear the 2019 Ford Edge features and specifications have
also had something of an overhaul. Along with tweaks to the styling there's an
extra dose of power at the entry level and at the other end of the spectrum
there's even a new trim level to temp buyers away from the competition.
Exterior and interior
styling
Exterior styling enhancements include changes to the bars in
the grille, and full LED headlights that have now become part of the SUV's
standard features. There's also a redesigned hood boasting a more contoured
appearance than we see with the current model's relatively flat form. Changes
at the rear are probably a little less noticeable than they are up front, so
all you’re likely to notice as different is the addition of a black strip of
trim below the hatchback's glass that does create a more visually interesting,
two-tone aesthetic. But if more rugged, muscular styling is what you want from
your new Ford
Edge, there's a new kid on the block by way of a new trim level that's
definitely worth checking out.
Ford Edge ST
We're used to having ST versions of the Fiesta and Focus,
but that treatment has now been given to the larger and more delighted Edge.
The new ST trim looks different from regular versions of the Edge, but the
enhancements are far more than skin deep. Under the hood is the same 2.7-liter
twin-turbo V-6 we already find in the Edge Sport, but in this incarnation it
develops 335 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. That's 20 horsepower and 30
lb.-ft. of torque more than in the Edge Sport, so that's enough reason on its
own to give this new trim level a closer look.
But ST models are as much about how they look compared to
regular models as they are about how much better they perform. Here we see the
trademark ST mesh grille that mirrors those on the Focus ST, the lower side
skirts and a revised rear bumper with dual exhaust outlets also illustrate the
model's sporty intentions of this variant. And on the inside, the seats receive
thicker bolsters and the whole thing has a more performance-focused feel.
More power elsewhere
Just as the ST uses and existing powerplant and gives it a
boost, entry level versions of the 2019 Edge get similar treatment. Base models
still get the familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, but an extra 5 horsepower
has been squeezed out of it so it now develops a very healthy 250 horsepower.
The automatic transmission is now an eight-speed instead of last year's
six-speed unit, and there are also additional safety features that are standard
such as forward collision warning, pre-collision assist, blind-spot monitoring,
lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams.
