Capability
Match the Terrain

The 2013 Ford Explorer is the most capable Explorer ever. It starts with the structure — thanks to high-tech materials and advanced forming technology. To help you handle everything from rugged off-roading to snow-covered roadways, there's the available Intelligent 4WD System and available Terrain Management System™. For your peace of mind, Curve Control, an enhancement to AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™, delivers enhanced control in turns. Open the door. The Explorer offers up to seven-passenger seating capacity and seats that fold down for cargo space on demand — up to 80.7 cubic feet of space. You expect capability in an SUV. Explorer delivers it.

Capability
Intelligent 4WD

Whether the road is filled with gravel, covered with ice or soaked by rain, the easy-to-use, shift-on-the-fly Intelligent 4WD System on the 2013 Explorer helps provide sure-footed traction. Intelligent 4WD is fully automatic, instantly delivering traction to the wheels with the most traction when wheel slip is detected. Working in concert with the 4WD System is the Terrain Management System™, which allows you to easily shift on the fly into one of four settings to match the terrain you're driving in. Take your pick of Normal, Mud/Ruts, Sand or Grass/Gravel/Snow. The 4WD System also includes Hill Descent Control™, which makes tackling off-road down hills much easier. Just push a button, tap your brakes and the Explorer will maintain a steady speed on its own, letting you concentrate on steering. On top of these features, the Intelligent 4WD System in the Explorer weighs less than traditional 4WD systems.

Performance
Fuel Efficiency

SUVs have always offered plenty of muscle, but many times it came at the expense of fuel efficiency. The 2013 Explorer offers the available new 2.0L I-4 EcoBoost™ engine, delivering the power of a V6 in a four-cylinder engine. The standard 3.5L V6 engine features best-in-class 25 highway mpg,1 unsurpassed 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque.1 With all that power and torque, Explorer can tow up to 5,000 lbs. when properly equipped.2 An SUV that delivers best-in-class fuel highway mpg and no-compromise power — that's the 2013 Explorer.

Performance
EcoBoost Engine

The EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine combines two different technologies — turbocharging and twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) — to deliver the performance of a much larger engine. It churns out 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque across a wide 1,750 — 4,000 rpm range.

Features Include:

  • All Aluminum
  • Direct Fuel Injection
  • Single turbocharger
  • Piston cooling jets for durability
  • Adaptive knock control

Smart
Rear Safety

Introducing the world's first automotive production inflatable rear safety belts. Available in the Explorer XLT and Limited models (second-row outboard seating positions), the inflated belt helps distribute crash force energy across more of the occupant's torso than a traditional belt, which helps reduce the risk of injury while providing support to the head and neck. In the event of a frontal or side crash, the inflatable safety belts hold the passenger in the appropriate seating position, helping to reduce risk of injury. These safety belts are compatible with child safety seats. In consumer tests, most respondents said the inflatable rear safety belts felt similar or softer and more comfortable than conventional safety belts. This can help encourage safety belt usage.

Smart
Stability Control

Standard AdvanceTrack® with RSC is the industry's only electronic stability control system that uses two gyroscopic sensors to monitor both yaw rate and roll rate. This allows AdvanceTrack® with RSC to help you maintain control whenever it detects wheel slip, understeer, oversteer or roll motion. It also helps maintain control in adverse road conditions such as ice, gravel or rain.3 AdvanceTrack® with RSC also features Curve Control, which will slow the vehicle down when it senses that it is going too fast for a particular curve. It's always active in helping you maintain control around the curves.

Technology
High-Tech Intelligence

The Explorer has a lot of high-tech intelligence to make your life on the road a whole lot easier. Take, for example, available SYNC® with MyFord Touch™4 — the easy-to-use in-car connectivity system. With simple voice commands, you can make phone calls, choose music, control your climate and more without taking your eyes off the road. Another feature, the available voice-activated Navigation System with integrated SiriusXM Traffic and SiriusXM Travel Link5, provides weather forecasts, traffic updates, fuel prices — even movie times. Yes, there's much more to the Ford Explorer than outstanding performance and flexibility.

Technology
Active Park Assist

Unlike other systems that employ imaging devices, available hands-free active park assist uses ultrasonic sensors. It's one of the many revolutionary technology features available in the 2013 Ford Explorer. Simply press a button and the sensors can actually locate a parallel-parking space for you. Once activated and with almost no input from you, your Explorer will be parallel parked.

1 EPA-estimated 17 city/25 hwy mpg V6, FWD. Class is Three-Row Large Utility Vehicles vs. 2011/2012 competitors.
2 Requires available Class III Trailer Tow Package.
3 Remember that even advanced technology cannot overcome the laws of physics. It's always possible to lose control of a vehicle due to inappropriate driver input for the conditions.
4 SYNC is optional on most vehicles. Features/functionality vary by vehicle/model. See dealer for details. Not all SYNC features compatible with all mobile phones. Features like ringtone support and audible text messages may not work with certain mobile phones. SYNC features for previous model years (and phone compatibility) available at the SYNC Owner website. Driving while distracted can result in loss of vehicle control. Only use mobile phones/MyFord Touch/other devices, even with voice commands, when it is safe to do so. Some features may be locked out while the vehicle is in gear.
