When you consider the sheer amount of capability and practicality a large crossover offers, compared to most other vehicles you can buy these days, it's no surprise they're so popular. Although pickups are still the biggest-sellers here in America, crossovers of all shapes and sizes seem to be pretty much taking over the auto market all around the world right now. However, such huge success can cause a few problems, and for some buyers, the fact so many crossovers look so similar could begin to reduce their desirability. So, if you're looking for a full-size crossover to accommodate up to seven people with masses of space, practicality, capability and versatility, but you also want one that stands out visually, the 2017 Ford Flex is definitely where you should start.
The exterior styling of the 2017 Ford Flex is more often than not going to be the biggest talking point for the majority of people. The Flex has now been with us in essentially its current form since the 2009 model year. When you think about the auto industry being one where models are normally refreshed after three or four years and get complete redesigns every six or seven years, the Flex's styling is holding up fantastically well. The exterior is unashamedly boxy, but it's a great representation of the no-compromise approach that's been adopted here by Ford as the Flex is proud and confident to be different in this respect. A similarity may well be noticed between the Flex and the Land Rover LR3, but that's to be expected as Ford was the owner of the British manufacturer when the LR3 was in development. Since those days, the LR3 has been superseded by the LR4, which itself has now been replaced by an all-new Discovery. This means the Ford Flex is perhaps now even more unique than it already was in the new vehicle market.

Climb inside the cabin of the 2017 Ford Flex and you'll find exactly what you'd want to find when viewing it from the outside. The interior is best described as large, spacious and comfortable, and the Flex comes well-equipped even at its entry level. Go for the higher trims though, and you really do start to venture into the realms of true luxury. The ride is fantastic, and what might be a lot more unexpected is the fact it's also superb to drive. Of course, the Flex is no Mustang GT350, but if you think buying a family vehicle means you're days of enjoying the driving experience are over, the Ford will prove you wrong.

The 2017 Ford Flex is available with two different powerplants and you're unlikely to be disappointed with either one. The standard engine is a 3.5-litre V-6 developing a very healthy 287 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque, which then goes to your choice of the front or all four wheels through a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with shifter button activation. This engine isn’t available with all-wheel drive in the entry level SE trim, but stepping up to the middle-of-the-range SEL model does bring the option of all-wheel drive into play. The optional, more powerful engine is only available in top-of-the-line Platinum models, where all-wheel drive is also part of the standard equipment. This time it's another 3.5-litre V-6, but this this one's a turbocharged EcoBoost unit producing as much as 365 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque that utilizes a six-speed automatic transmission to power all four wheels.
