There’s Plenty to Do and Plenty to See in the City of Chino Hills
Chino Hills is located what many might consider the apex of Southern California. Officially part of San Bernadino County, the City of Chino Hills borders Los Angeles County, Orange County, and RIverside County. Not surprising then that its growth is reflective of what occurred across Southern California in the 20th Century. In 1990 about 27,000 people resided in Chino Hills and most of the residences were of the four-legged variety, primarily horses and cattle. By 2010 the population had roughly tripled to around 75,000 residents. And while most cattle operations had been relocated, Chino Hills holds firm its ranching heritage.
Horses play an important role in Chino Hills, with a number of stables, riding schools, and exhibition grounds. The horse is also plays an important role in the Ford community as well as its most illustrious model carries a horse on its grill. That, of course, is the Ford Mustang, a car that succeeded as a model the way Chino Hills has a city. The original Mustang so captured the imagination of the American population that one million Mustangs were sold in the first 18 months and it continues as an icon to this day.
The McCoy Equestrian & Recreation Center
The McCoy Equestrian & Recreation Center is owned by the City of Chino Hills. The center features three arenas: a Main Show Arena, a smaller Show Arena, and a Warm-up Arena. The Equestrian & Recreation Center is in almost constant use hosting equestrian shows and events including Dressage, Western, and Hunter / Jumper.
Yanks Air Museum
Just over the line in neighboring Chino is the Chino Airport and the Yanks Air Museum. On display is a WWII P-51D Mustang, which like the Ford Mustang was developed in an incredibly short amount of time. Any historian will tell you that the various evolutions of the P-51 Mustang throughout WWII played a pivotal role in the Allies successful termination of the war. Beyond its record and its performance, the P-51 Mustang was a beautiful machine. Its name inspired Ford to name its breakthrough sports car after the famed fighter plane.
Boys Republic
Boys Republic is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian school and treatment community for troubled youngsters. Since its founding in 1907, it has guided more than 30,000 at-risk teenage boys and girls toward productive, fulfilling lives. No former student proved this to be better than Steve McQueen, a 1946 alumnus of Boys. During the height of Steve’s demanding movie career, he would visit Boys Republic often and leverage contacts, friends and movie studios to help the needs of the school. Each June there’s a Friends of Steve McQueen Car Show at the facility, and what better reason but to drive there in a 5.0 L V8-powered Mustang GT Fastback, the newest version of the car Steve made famous in the movie “Bullit”.
